NFL Picks: Week 9

San Diego @ Minnesota:

The battle of the running backs should make this game worth watching. Adrian Peterson has been having a blow up rookie year, and Tomlinson is Tomlinson. The Vikings defense usually does a good job stopping the run. LT will probably still do his part, but the Chargers will need Philip Rivers to do what he did last week to get their 4th win in a row.

The Pick: Chargers

Jacksonville @ New Orleans:

The Jaguars won in Tampa last week despite only 200 yards of offense. The Saints come rolling in to this game looking like the Saints of ‘06. They’ve won 3 in a row and their offense is finally beginning to mesh. Quinn Grey is still the QB for Jacksonville. The Jags better run for more than 200 yards this week if they have any hopes of winning and improving to 6-2.

The Pick: Saints

New England @ Indianapolis:

The Game of the year. Will probably be better than the Superbowl. Indianapolis has to find a way to slow down Tom Brady and his many weapons. And the Patriots have to keep Peyton off the field. I don’t expect either defense to have much success. This game should be a shootout and a great one to watch between two high-powered offenses. The punters will probably have the best seat in the house to view the action. Final score should be something like 55-52.

The Pick: Colts

Dallas @ Philadelphia: The return of T.O to Philly. Wait that already happened last year so it’s not that big of a deal. Although, I am always rooting for a T.O blow up. Philly desperately needs the win. Hopefully Andy Reid’s “drug emporium” hasn’t funneled in to the Eagles locker room causing a distraction. It’s their last chance to get themselves in to the mix in the NFC East. The Cowboys come in 7-1 and well rested off their bye week. Romo needs to play well in the hostile environment that is Philadelphia. He better not play another game like he did in Buffalo.

The Pick: Cowboys

Pittsburgh @ Baltimore: The Monday night battle for first place in the AFC North. I’m looking forward to watching this game in mute because I don’t think I can sit through another MNF game listening to Tony Kornheiser in the booth. These are two great defenses and one good offense. Pittsburgh is much better on both sides of the ball. Although it’s always difficult to go on the road and in the NFL, especially against a division rival, Big Ben, Willie Parker, and Hines Ward should be able to get it done for the Steelers.

The Pick: Steelers

Last Week: 2-3 (Season: 21-19)

The Patriots: Sore Winners

The Patriots are definitely the most dominant team in football but that doesn’t mean there is any class in this organization whatsoever.  Three weeks in a row now they have run up the score against Dallas, Miami and Washington.  Sunday’s game against Washington was the worst.  The game got out of control quickly. It was obvious to everyone on the field, and off, that the Redskins couldn’t stop the Patriots, nor were they going to move the ball much throughout the game or get many first downs.  With that said, the score is 38-0 and there’s 11 minutes left in the game. The Patriots have the ball down inside the Redskins 10 yard-line.  Now instead of kicking a field goal, they decide to go for it.  So instead of taking the guaranteed 3 points, there’s a chance they won’t get any points at all right? Wrong. That would have seemed to be the case if they handed it off to Maroney or Evans, but they decide to do a QB sneak!  Apparently three points wasn’t enough.  They were going for the first down and the 7 points. The touchdown they scored ended up being a pass to Wes Welker.

The fact that Tom Brady and Randy Moss were still in the game in the fourth quarter just baffles me. Besides the fact that Brady is launching 40 yard passes down the field to Moss. I don’t care what anyone says about there being no mercy rule in the NFL; you just don’t run up a score and embarrass another team like this.  It’s especially bad to do it against a team with so much class and coached by Joe Gibbs.  It’s a different story if you’re playing against a guy like Eric Mangini or a rival team.  In this case it still wouldn’t be right, but it’s not quite as bad.

What’s going to happen now is someone is going to get hurt.  Keep running up the score Bill and embarrassing other teams; keep proving how good you are without cheating.  All you are going to do is piss off the wrong 300 pound lineman and he’s going to pop your boy Tom Brady and you’re road to the Superbowl is going to be led by Matt Cassel.  I know if I was on the other side of the ball and you were embarrassing my team and acting the way you act, and I had the chance to hit Brady, I would take it even if it were after the play.  Fine me, give me a 15-yard penalt, but every second would be worth it.  This type of thing is inevitable if you continue to run the score up week after week.

NFL Picks: Week 8- Horses and Donkeys

Detroit at Chicago – The Lions beat the Bears a few weeks ago in Brian Griese’s 1st start.  Griese has played much better since then.  Devin Hester and Greg Olsen have helped in the passing game, but Cedric Benson has continued his struggles running the ball.  Detroit’s offense is hard to slow down and this should be another high scoring game.  The Bears defense is just not the same this year.  Chicago needs to get revenge.
Pick:  Bears

Jacksonville at Tampa Bay – The Jaguars will be without David Garrard for the next couple of weeks.  This may be a big problem with the inexperienced Quinn Grey taking over.  It isn’t exactly a high-powered offense to begin with and the Bucs are a very good defensive team.  Tampa will focus on stopping Jacksonville’s running game.  Jeff Garcia faces a tough defense also.  The Jaguars are especially tough to run against.  I just don’t think the Jaguars can win in Tampa without Garrard.
Pick: Bucs

Green Bay at Denver – The Broncos got a huge win Sunday night against the Steelers.  They can build on that with another good performance vs. the Pack.  Jay Cutler played one of his best games last week, and seems to be improving with every snap.  The Packers come in at 5-1 off a bye.  The defense has been carrying Green bay all year.  Brett Favre has been good, but the Packers need to find a consistent running game if they want to win tough road games like this one.  Travis Henry really needs a big game this week for Denver.
Pick:  Broncos

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati – The Bengals got a much-needed win last week against the Jets.  Their defense has still not played well all year.  That better change this week vs. Pittsburgh.  Willie Parker is one of the leading rushers in the league and Ben Roethlisberger is playing well.  Although Kenny Watson had the best game of his career last week, I don’t expect a repeat performance against the Steelers.  This game could be season changing for the Bengals and they’ll put up some points, but it probably just won’t be enough.
Pick:  Steelers

Indianapolis at Carolina – The Colts are 6-0 and heading towards a huge game with the Pats next week.  They better not overlook the Panthers though.  Carolina is 4-2, but with Carr or Testaverde at QB, they are in bad shape.  They don’t run the ball well enough to take pressure off the quarterback, and neither QB is able to win a game on his own.  As long as Indy can stay focused and not look ahead, Peyton and company will head into week 9 undefeated.
Pick:  Colts

Last week 2-3 ( Season 19-16)

Horses:

  • Braylon Edwards – could be a huge game vs. a terrible Rams team
Plaxico Burress – Randy Moss showed you can just throw it up high against Miami and Plaxico is 6’5
Ben Roesthlisberger- Every offense in the league can’t wait to play against this Bengals defense
Marshawn Lynch- Kenny Watson ran all over the Jets last week.  Lynch will do the same and the Jets may be without Jonathan Vilma
Frank Gore- If he’s going to do good any week it’s gotta be this one against the Saints defense
Donovan McNabb – the Vikings rank worst in the league against the pass allowing over 250 yards a game.  McNabb should be huge this week

Donkeys:

  • Kenny Watson- after a career day gets a much tougher defense this week in Pittsburgh.
Jeff Garcia- Has played like a pro bowl QB all year, but the Jaguars are a tough match-up
Fred Taylor/ MJD- Jones-Drew is hurting a may not even play.  The Buc’s defense will stop the run and force Quinn Grey to throw
LaMont Jordan- After a great start, Jordan has slowed the last few weeks.  The Titans defense is one of the best vs. the run
Clinton Portis- against a tough New England defense.
Steve Smith-  he’s really the only threat in Carolina’s offense, and with Vinny at QB I’m sure the Colts aren’t going to let Steve Smith hurt them

NFL Power Rankings- Week 7 in Review

If Tom Brady played the Dolphins every week he would throw 196 touchdown passes.  Miami is still winless and lost Ronnie Brown for year with an ACL injury.

Rob Bironas set an NFL record with 8 field goals.  He actually outscored 17 teams by himself this week in the Titans 38-36 win over the Texans.

The Colts are still undefeated.  They beat up the Jaguars 29-7.

The Giants won their 4th in a row vs. San Fran and head to London for some brews and likely another win against the Dolphins.

Kansas City is in 1st place at 4-3 in the AFC West.  It was another thoroughly unimpressive win, this time against the Raiders.  Don’t expect this to last too long.

The Bears and Eagles both showed they aren’t very good.  The Bears won 19-16.  This will probably have no impact on this NFL season.

Detroit knocked off Tampa 23-16.  The Lions are now 4-2 and are in serious contention for a playoff spot in the weak NFC.

The Rams are sooooooooo bad……….another embarrassing loss this week to Seattle 33-6.

Denver upset Pittsburgh Sunday night on a last second field goal 31-28.  I don’t think anyone saw that coming.  The Broncos really needed that win to turn their season around.  The Steelers are 4-2 atop the AFC North.

The Redskins are now 4-2 after defeating the Cardinals 21-19.  The Skins tried to blow the game late, but Neil Rackers missed a 55-yard field goal as the game ended. Arizona falls to a disappointing 3-4.

NFL POWER RANKINGS

1.        New England

2.      Indianapolis

3.      Dallas

4.     Green Bay

5.      Pittsburgh

6.     NY Giants

7.      San Diego

8.      Tennessee

9.     Washington

10.  Jacksonville

Waiver Wire:

  • Jesse Chatman RB/Miami- Ronnie Brown is out for the year- Chatman has been named the starter. Against New England on Sunday, he had over 14 fantasy points and he didn’t play the whole game.  He has a chance to produce some numbers the rest of the season

  • Jason Wright RB/Cleveland- good match up this week against St. Louis.  Jamal Lewis might be back this week or soon but Wright is a good guy to have on your team as an option.
